LETTER: Conservative Chairman on Country Show fiasco
9:25am Wednesday 22nd February 2012

Dear Editor,
Streatham Conservatives welcome the news that the council has reversed its controversial decision to cancel the Lambeth Country Show. A smaller replacement event in September is far from satisfactory, but something is better than nothing. With no Olympic sports events being held in the borough, our community was in serious danger of being short-changed by one of the most expensive councils in the country.
The Council badly misjudged public feeling and support for this event and have rightly reversed their original decision. However, I know many will find that the graceless and self-serving way in which the Council has executed this U-turn leaves a sour taste.
Senior Lambeth politicians, who should be accountable for the actions of the council, have shamelessly attempted to pass the blame for the original decision to cancel the show to anyone but themselves.
I find it incredible that the Leader of the Council is now claiming that the event was always going ahead and is seemingly seeking to pass the blame onto some poor soul in the website department who had the misfortune to post the original decision online.
This shameful, spineless and substandard behaviour is no way to run an authority. Lambeth deserves better.
Yours faithfully, Ben Everitt (Chairman of Streatham Conservatives)
